The Haunting Of Holland House: Chapter Twenty
THE GHOST HUNTERS APPRENTICE - BOOK ONE
CHAPTER TWENTY
Mr. Benson droned through the morning register, pausing after each name to mark the attendance sheet. "Hannigan, Amy?"
Silence.
Todd's stomach knotted.
"Not here again, sir," Michelle drawled, inspecting her manicure.
Mr. Benson sighed and marked the sheet. "Stine, Christopher?"
More silence.
Todd gripped his pen, knuckles whitening. He felt like he was going crazy.
"Seems like everyone's skiving off today," someone chuckled. A few nearby kids tittered.
"Kane, David?" Mr. Benson called.
No response.
The teacher peered over his glasses, scanning the room.
Todd followed his gaze to Dave's empty seat beside him.
Todd's heart hammered against his ribs. First Amy and Chris, now Dave. The evil fuck that lurked within Holland House had come for them all.
Were they dead?
Trapped?
Possessed?
He needed to find out.
Todd's eyes locked onto Imogen's from across the room. Her violet gaze probed him, full of unspoken questions. Todd knew she could read the dread in his eyes.
Mr. Benson finished registration and began lecturing on Shakespearean sonnets.
Todd tried focusing on the analysis of rhyme schemes and rhythmic patterns, anything to distract his spiralling thoughts.
But the words blurred together meaninglessly.
All he could think about was Amy, Chris, and now Dave - their empty seats taunting him, visible out of the corner of his eye.
Todd's palms were sweaty as he gripped his pen in white-knuckled fury.
He should have listened to Chris's warnings. Should have believed his claims that something evil lurked within those peeling wallpapered halls, instead of dismissing it all as bollocks.
And now Dave too?
